| WHY OUR TRAINING IS DIFFERENT |
WHAT WE DON'T DO:
1. Sport fighting or competitive grappling. Sport matches have rules, the street does not. The street has multiple attackers, sport matches do not. Read more.
2. Flowery, fancy moves. This is not a movie and your attacker won't be impressed.
3. Delusional "Reality-based self defense" with no correlation to reality. There are very expensive systems out there that claim to have some special secrets to surviving violent attacks that have no correlation to the forensic reality of real violence:
- Systems of locks and holds that will "immobilize" the attacker. Why do you see gangs of police officers "piling" on top of single perps on TV episodes of Cops and youtube? Because locks only work on drunks. And forget about "controlling" the enemy's knife hand at adrenaline speed...unless you want to become hamburger.
- Systems that focus only on hitting the enemy's lethal targets while ignoring both your own defense and the enemy's attacks on you--even if they have weapons. Nobody is going to just "let" you hit them--bad guys hit back--and defend themselves as well. And you can't just "trade" blows with a knifer...or shooter--and survive intact.
4. Tell you there are "secret" Pressure Points that will magically provide "one-touch knockouts" of your attackers. There are only two "pressure points" that have real stopping power against an enraged, determined enemy: the throat and the eyes. All the others have greatly limited effectiveness during the wild chaos of real violence. Police reports show that even direct kicks to the groin can be withstood by psychotic or meth-addicted monsters. The trick is getting to your targets while simultaneously protecting your own.
5. Promise you you'll become invincible. ("We guarantee you'll stop a murderous motorcycle gang with one hand tied behind your back!"). Schools that make promises like that are worse than dangerous. We make no guarantees because as cops, Feds and soldiers, we know real violence is a crap-shoot. Even when you "win" you can be seriously injured. But we teach what we have found to be the best tools to survive.
WHAT WE DO:
1. Teach you to flow and adapt with your attacker, blending your defense and offense simultaneously, spontaneously, and without pre-planned moves. Essentially you will learn to create your defense moment-by-moment, giving you what you need, when you need it, to survive and escape. And we start teaching you this from Day One--not after 20 years.
2. We teach the mastery of 5 principles of dynamic motion using unique drills--and not rigid techniques. These are Balance, Body Unity, Looseness and Sensitivity, culminating in the 5th principle: Total Freedom of Action and Adaptivity. No one else does this, or does it the way we do. Read more.
3. For beginners and those short on time, we teach simple, brutal, easy to learn methods based on proven World War II Close Quarters Combat taught to our soldiers in 8 hours to fight the Japanese in the jungles of the Pacific (who were all thought to be karate and judo masters). Unfortunately this is not what is being taught to cops and soldiers today. These methods have been enhanced with select Guided Chaos principles (hitting power and balance) and are effective against most attacks you're likely to encounter. You can then go on to learn the entire art of Guided Chaos which is much more advanced--yet make quicker progress than with most systems.
4. Groundfighting and Weapons defenses based on the forensic reality of true violence, not sportive grappling or delusional disarms that can make things far worse. These martial myths are hard to believe when shown for what they are, yet they comprise the majority of what is being taught in the biggest schools today.

The GUIDED CHAOS Teaching System
| ...is a comprehensive martial art and self-defense curriculum created in 1978 by former crime scene expert John Perkins. It promotes exponential learning in both beginning and advanced students. It is based on concepts from World War II Combatives, Native American fighting, Combat Tai Chi, and the ancient Greek art of Eleftheri Pali.
SIMPLE METHODS you can master in weeks. Guided Chaos Combatives are simple, brutal methods based on enhanced World War II hand-to-hand fighting. ADVANCED METHODS take you as far as you can go, faster. Guided Chaos is an American style that turns the entire self-defense/martial art learning curve upside down. You will be practicing and UNDERSTANDING the most sought after and advanced martial arts concepts RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING that few, if any, practitioners train, if ever. No mystical crap--everything is based 100% on physics and physiology. We have no secrets and hold nothing back.
CONTACT FLOW is a revolutionary, free-form training method utilizing drills, exercises and principles that cover everything from Awareness and avoidance to hand-to-hand and weapons training.
| This safe, "anything goes" method has you learning faster and more completely by stressing ADAPTATION AND IMPROVISATION--as opposed to rigid techniques that have been proven to fail under extreme pressure. |
The GUIDED CHAOS CONTACT FLOW training method does this by combining proven, World War II combat methods with highly advanced "internal energy" principles that were previously understood by very few individuals. (Tai Chi students may study for decades and never master them.) It is a unique Guided Chaos "anything-goes", free-form sparring exercise focusing on energy, sensitivity, balance, body unity, looseness and adaptivity.
Although it appears somewhat similar to tai chi push-hands and wing chun chi sao in appearance, it utilizes all forms of striking, kicking, gouging, breaking, groundfighting, and military combatives as well as a proprietary method of power development called "Drop-Force Striking" (which is not used in any other martial art)--in short, everything and anything that may occur in Real World violence. Part of this involves the training of "Combat Consciousness": an all-out Warrior Mentality that takes into account the kind of dynamic, changing, unchoreographed chaos that characterizes true violence.
Contact Flow is practiced both at slow speed to maximize the development of the above attributes, all the way up to full speed (depending upon the participants’ skill level) but always at the same agreed upon speed with the end result of fulfilling the Guided Chaos maxim of becoming "Unavailable yet Unavoidable."
Anti-mugging, rape and car-jacking material as well as knife, gun and club defenses are presented along with anecdotal real life stories by John Perkins. The versatility of Guided Chaos means that you can get a good low-impact aerobic workout and develop effective fighting skills without having to be an Olympic athlete. While no previous training is necessary for learning Guided Chaos, John Perkins has a reputation for teaching Black Belts how to fight better. |
|
ELMSFORD CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (Elmsford GC Headquarters location only) |

1- Guided Chaos Combatives (GCC): Simple, quick and deadly, this is the first level of Guided Chaos.
HIT HARDER = HIT FASTER = MAKE THEM COUNT!
There are other World War II combative systems out there. Some are authentic and some are watered-down MacDojo nonsense. The best of these derive from the simple, effective techniques created for U.S. soldiers in World War II and used in thousands of documented police and military conflicts.
John Perkins takes these methods and supercharges them with principles from tai chi (internal energy) and Native American fighting concepts ("anything goes" adaptability). Understand that the original Close Quarters Combat developed by Colonel Rex Applegate, William Donovan and members of the OSS was lethal all by itself (it was devised because of a perceived inadequacy in our troops' Hand to Hand training compared to that of Japanese Soldiers schooled in Judo and Karate. This led to a training overhaul by our own military in the late 1930's and used in countless close engagements against Japanese troops in World War II.)
Guided Chaos Combatives is just the first level of Guided Chaos. It teaches you the basic weaponry in a short period of time. See the GCC manual, available as a Premium eBook and video package on www.GuidedChaosCombatives.com, as an Amazon Kindle eBook, and an Amazon Paperback.
Earn your Guided Chaos Combatives Course Completion Certificate by successfully passing the GCC exam after completing approx. 20 classes (at the instructor's discretion). Testing fee: $50. This is a pre-requisite for taking the GCC Instructor Certification Exam.
Note: For the regular GCC class, students need to purchase their own light duty elbow pads similar to these for all our hitting drills.
GCC Certified Instructors as of 1/1/13: --Grandmaster John Perkins --Masters Al Ridenhour, Michael Watson, Matt Kovsky --Ari Kandel, 4th degree GC --Al Tino, 3rd degree GC --Kevin Harrell, 4th degree GC --Yosef Susskind, 3rd degree GC --Michael Goldman (Former Detective) --Joe Martarano, 4th degree GC --Patrick Jones, 2nd degree GC --Mick James, 2nd degree GC --Michael Coplon --Bill MacEachern 7/14/2012 --Devin Ronaldson 12/29/2012 |
 2- Guided Chaos:
Guided Chaos Combatives (above) is the first level of Guided Chaos. It teaches you the basic weaponry in a short period of time. You can then go on to learn the much more advanced mother art of Guided Chaos--a revolutionary system that frees your body and mind to fight with the natural animal motion best suited for humans. Rather than using robotic, regimented or sportive techniques, it focuses on pure adaptability to help you survive the unchoreographed chaos that characterizes every real life and death struggle. These methods are found nowhere else.
The creation of Guided Chaos: In 1978, ex-cop and former crime scene expert John Perkins broke away from all classical systems and created Ki Chuan Do ("The Way of the Spirit Fist") and the principles of Guided Chaos [in 1998 the name of the art itself was changed to Guided Chaos]. By abandoning all patterned technique training in favor of methods that promote spontaneity, creativity and adaptability, Perkins generated a tremendous amount of controversy among strict classicists but a lot of interest from security professionals, federal, state and metropolitan law enforcement officers as well as hand-to-hand tactics instructors from all branches of the U.S. military.
In Guided Chaos Contact/Combat Flow classes, everyone gets individual attention and learns at their own pace. You will never be subjected to regimented, robotic training typical of franchised MacDojos. Although we teach the most advanced internal principles right from the start, we hold nothing back and pack more into a 60 minute class than just about anyone...while making sure that everyone understands the concepts and gets the hands-on attention necessary. Training is intense, varied and fun--yet always focused on the goal of maximum combat adaptability and survival.
"Guided Chaos is a true link between Internal and External Martial Arts." |
 3- Guided Chaos Groundfighting (GCGF):
Like the rest of the art, GCGF has no techniques to lock up the mind. All REAL fights are un-patterned and unpredictable anyway. We emphasize principles of evasion and sensitivity that dictate you NOT attempt to control, grapple, lock up or otherwise directly engage the enemy (this leaves you vulnerable to multiple attackers). GCGF is not a sport. There's no "sparring" or point-fighting. You learn to fight ONLY to save your life. We teach reactive freedom, so that your body snakes and slithers from control, like the way a mongoose or enraged alley cat moves. This is counter to most grappling philosophies which are not mirrored in nature. When was the last time you saw a leopard put a figure 4 lock on an antelope? They rake with claws and teeth, going for the throat and the kill. To save your life or the life of a loved one, we teach free-flowing sledgehammer kicks from the ground that to the uninformed look like break dancing--but are deadly serious and far simpler, along with strikes to the eyes and throat with no controlling or submission moves or counter-moves. The last thing you need is to tie up with a bigger and stronger attacker. Disable the enemy and escape. See our comprehensive Groundfighting article for more info. |
4. Guided Chaos Combat Conditioning People always ask: "How do I get better at Guided Chaos?" The answer is simple: Do the drills!
To develop the 5 Main Principles (Balance, Body Unity, Looseness, Sensitivity and Complete Combat Adaptability), Grandmaster Perkins created unique drills and exercises found in no other system. Many of them combine attributes trained in other internal arts (Tai Chi, Bagua, Hsing-i, etc.) that would ordinarily take years to master.
The GCCC classes are intense, targeted, focused workouts comprised of all the GC drills found in our books and videos. They are designed to improve your core GC attributes as rapidly as possible no matter what your level of skill. By attending regularly, your Contact/Combat Flow will show demonstrable, continual improvement--and thus your fighting ability. |
 5.- Guided Chaos Weapons:
From the military to civilians and even the police-- knife, gun and stick fighting is often taught unrealistically. Based on the brutal, bloody, forensic homicide research of former detective John Perkins plus Perkins' over 100 seriously violent arrests, this comprehensive component of the complete Guided Chaos system separates film fantasy from forensic fact and dojo delusions from real combat. The training provides you effectives methods based on actual combat while exposing popular gun disarms and flowery stick and knife defenses that can get you killed. This training includes:
• Drills: Knife vs. Knife Variations--Myth vs. Reality • Native American (West Virginian Hill Country) Knife Fighting • Knife on the Ground vs. Knife • Drills: Knife vs. Knife Agility Drill • Drills: Knife (or Pen) vs. Multiple Attackers • Stand-up Kicking vs. The Knife • Groundfighting vs. the Knife • Drills: Bare-handed vs. the Knife • Drill: Enclosed Fighting "The Hell-evator" • Cane vs Knife • Cane Fighting from the Ground vs. Knife • Drills: Cane fighting From the Ground • Drills: Cane vs. Multiple Attackers in Close Quarters • Bare-hands to Handguns: Fantasy vs. Reality • Accessing Your Gun Under Pressure ...and much, much more

REMOTE VIDEO EVALUATION/INSTRUCTION |
|
Ancient proverb: "A one-inch error at the start becomes a thousand-mile error by the end."
Can't make it to New York? Send us a 5 minute video of yourself doing Contact Flow with a partner and we will give you a detailed written analysis of what to work on in your training. Don't fly blind! Stay on track and maximize your development.
Video can be in any of the following formats:
• Mini DV cassette • Emailed wmv or quicktime file (compressed) • iPhone format • Private posting on Youtube (recommended). This is the simplest and cheapest method (If you don't know how to do this go to the youtube/google private posting info page or contact us). Don't forget to give us access.
Once GM Perkins and Master Ridenhour have received or viewed your video, purchase an evaluation and they will send a comprehensive report detailing your current level, strong points, faults and what you need to work on (and how) to maximize your future development, tailored to your body and your needs. This will include drills, principles and even proprietary exercises to give you the adaptive edge. MORE INFO.

"Beyond anything I've seen"

"Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene." |
| --Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the June print edition of Blitz Martial Arts Magazine.] | |
|
