SELF-DEFENSE IS  WORTHLESS  UNLESS IT CAN:

 1. Teach you to improvise and ADAPT.

Remember, your #1 goal is to SURVIVE and that means to ESCAPE and run like hell if you can. If you have to fight to escape, know this well: in a real attack, ANYTHING can and will happen. Whether it's Tai Chi, Ju Jitsu, JKD or Karate, patterned or sport-based technique training is a prescription for disaster. Your brain is not a computer and you are not a robot. Under the extreme duress of real violence, it is impossible to deliver a pre-arranged technique in response to a chaotic attack. Your nervous system simply doesn't work that way. You must learn to flow and IMPROVISE moment by moment to fight your way free by encouraging, not suppressing, natural animal responses. Internal arts such as Tai Chi acknowledge and attempt to tap into this tremendous energy source but in most cases, they try to squeeze it into a rigid, inflexible mold that by its very nature, destroys adaptation to real combat and chaotic violence. After decades you may learn to break the mold and fight spontaneous and free. However, make no mistake about it: developing Adaptation and Improvisation requires specialized training from the very beginning--NOT at the end of your training. If you're a police officer, military member or security professional and escape is not on the menu, the ability to improvise and adapt is even more important.

 2. Teach from ACTUAL combat experience--
                  NOT sportive competitions.

If you had to protect your child from some mutant you would fight much differently than if you were in a ring or "Octagon." Sports and MMA have rules and people train hard to excel within these parameters. Unfortunately, the way you train is the way you fight.

As a police officer regularly sent to bloodbaths in progress, John Perkins survived well over 100 brutally violent arrest scenarios where people routinely went to the hospital or morgue. In addition, he engaged in unsanctioned pit-fighting and bodyguard work for foreign and domestic dignitaries. Trained from age 5 by his father and uncles in World War II close quarters combat and Native American fighting methods, Perkins went on to become a forensic homicide investigator for the Yonkers NY police. Combining all this with instruction from Korean Combat Hapkido Master Ik Jo Kang and Tai Chi Master Waysun Liao, Perkins created GUIDED CHAOS, a formless reality-based art that deals with violence the way it is, not the way we want it to be, or the way it's depicted in movies.  Perkins' methods were used regularly by Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC in Iraq and other members of the U.S. Armed Forces and police departments today.

"John Perkins' combat methods [Guided Chaos] are the most efficient and devastating that I have experienced before, during, and since the military."
--Ret. Lieutenant Dick Shea, original Navy SEAL team member

"The other martial arts are about beautiful choreography.
There's nothing dance-like about this."

--Eric Haney, Command Sergeant Major (retired) founding member Delta Force from SPYMASTER on The Learning Channel

"John Perkins is an expert in the dynamics of violence."
--Dr. Peter Pizzola, Director, NYPD Crime Lab

 3. Teach what will work for YOU, not an Olympic athlete.

Though it never hurts to be in shape, your self-defense should not be based on your ability to do flying wheel kicks, brick-breaking, splits or flips. Though Guided Chaos can be great low and high impact aerobic exercise, the focus is on developing skills that virtually anyone can use effectively...and have fun learning.

"Guys--Just had to respond after reading the newsletter.  Guided Chaos is so awesome.  I'm so thankful I've even got the basics down.  Even polishing the sphere has made me twice as agile and athletic and made me better at everything from basketball to dancing.  Awesome work Master Perkins!"

"Best thing about training on my own is receiving the newsletters! Out here in Minnesota I'm kind of on my own in terms of finding training partners so the newsletters (along with the DVDs and the book) are an invaluable source of information and inspiration. I find that when I check my e-mail and see the new newsletter it gets me jazzed up for my next Guided Chaos work out/solo training session. So thanks for the constant motivation and encouragement."
