ADDITIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS IN THE SECOND EDITION...

The GUN DEFENSE I drill on page 239 was originally intended as a simple exercise to practice getting a gun off-line held anywhere on your body. We have the opportunity here, however, to provide a far more comprehensive drill with many more variables than there was room for in the book.

The first point we want to emphasize is already repeated several times:
BOTTOM LINE #1-- IF YOU SEE A GUN, RUN!

That being said, if you can't just take off (for various reasons explained below) you'll want to have practiced the following variables. Understand, fight or flight is a personal judgment call and we can't account for every scenario.

BOTTOM LINE #2-- DO NOT GO TO CRIME SCENE NUMBER 2 IF YOU WANT TO LIVE!
(This is reiterated throughout the book.)

SCENARIO 1:
Gun presentation WITHOUT restraint OR demand for money:

1.  While spinning slowly with your eyes closed, have your practice partner with the plastic gun verbally address you while standing several feet away.

2.  Open your eyes immediately. Run like hell if you are physically able and not restrained. Don't wait for them to say anything, don't talk, just GO. If you're on the street and there's cover you can run behind, all the better. Try this in varied environments: parking lots (use cars as cover), small rooms (i.e. elevators--where you can't run), large rooms (walls and furniture as cover). You may be shot anyway but that's a decision you'll have to make based on the attacker's demeanor and determination. Think of it this way: if he wanted to kill you, you'd be dead already (this is what we refer to in the book as an assassination, against which there is no defense, period).  If it's an enclosed space or you can't run or there's no place to run to, say: "you got me, you're the boss, what do you want?"

3.  If he asks for money, and you can't run, give him your whole wallet. If he wants to take you somewhere, wait until the gun is either on you or within your reach and potential control. If it's not, lure him in (fake a heart attack or fear paralysis, etc.) and attack the attacker with the methods shown elsewhere in the book. Run.

SCENARIO 2:
Gun presentation WITHOUT restraint AND demand for money:

1.  While spinning slowly with your eyes closed, have your partner with the plastic gun verbally address you while standing several feet away.

2.  Open your eyes immediately. Maybe you can run. That is a judgment call based on your condition and his demeanor and determination. It also depends on whether you have a friend or loved one with you who can't run or doesn't have your training. Train that scenario also. For whatever reason, you can't run and he's totally got the drop on you. Give him your whole wallet.

If it's not, lure him in (fake a heart attack or paralysis, etc.) and attack the attacker with the methods shown elsewhere in the book. Run. In our Barehands to Handguns DVD we also present a last ditch method for U.S. soldiers or police captured by the enemy which we won't go into here.

SCENARIO 3:
Gun presentation AGAINST OR NEAR YOUR BODY, WITHOUT restraint AND demand for money:

1.  While spinning slowly with your eyes closed, have your partner press the plastic gun against or near ANY part of your body he or she can think of. Variation is vital to your practice.

2.   Open your eyes and give him your whole wallet. If he wants to take you somewhere, instantly smash the weapon off-line. Follow the principles in the book for getting off-line PROPERLY without getting your head blown off! Add control as necessary (as outlined in the book) and simultaneously strike an available vulnerable target (like the eyes or throat) and run like hell if he is disabled and not holding you. As just mentioned, depending on the placement of the gun, you may need to additionally immobilize the gun and/or gun arm while striking.

SCENARIO 4:
Gun presentation AGAINST OR NEAR YOUR BODY, WITH restraint AND demand for money:

1.  While spinning slowly with your eyes closed, have your partner press the plastic gun against or near ANY part of your body he or she can think of. Variation is vital to your practice.

2.   Open your eyes and give him your whole wallet. If he wants to take you somewhere, instantly smash the weapon off-line.

As just mentioned, depending on the placement of the gun, you may need to additionally immobilize the gun and/or gun arm while striking. If you are being restrained in such a way as to make counter-attack impossible (arm tightly around your throat lifting you with gun jammed in your mouth, etc.) you will have to feign a heart attack, fear paralysis, etc. to get him to change his gun and restraint position on you to allow your counter-attack. This may happen, for example, as you're walked to and/or positioned to be placed in a vehicle.

SIMPLIFIED OFF-LINING DRILL:

This is what actually was supposed to be on p. 239. It is used merely to quickly train every possible reaction to random gun placement. NOTE that it doesn't train actual scenarios as with the comprehensive drill above where we decided to combine many variables to simulate reality.

1.  While spinning slowly with your eyes closed, have your partner press the plastic gun against ANY part of your body he or she can think of.

2. Instantly open your eyes and smash the weapon off-line while simultaneously attacking eyes, throat, etc. Follow the principles in the book for getting off-line PROPERLY without getting your head blown off! Add control as necessary (as outlined in the book). Run.

NOTE: See our Weapons Series DVDs for even more scenarios and variables.
